Traveling in Croatia - A guide
With Hungary to the north, Serbia to the east, and Bosnia/Herzegovina to the south, the borders define Croatia as a Central European and Mediterranean country.
Croatia shares with Italy a sea side border along the Adriatic Sea. These borders cover 2028KM long.
Croatia has rather peculiar borderlines. (much like a croissant) -different from other countries because of 500 years of expansion by the Ottoman Empire -From Turkey and its dynasty in the direction of central Europe (incidentally, the Turks were never able to subdue Croatia).
Croatia covers a land area of 56,691 square kilometres and has a population of about 4.4,000,000 people (census of 2001). 90% or above of the entire population is Croat. (Most of the people are Roman Catholics.), other minority populations include Serbian, Bosnian, Hungarian and Italian peoples.
Zagreb, a capital, is one of the main population centres with less than 800,000 inhabitantsRijeka and Split in the south and Osijek in the northwest. Written in old Latin script, Croatian is their official language.
Croatia has a total of 5,835km of coastline which is comprised of 4,057km of cliffs, islands and reefs. Out of 1,185 islands only 50 of Adriatic are populated. Krk is the principle isle. (not far from Rijeka) Which occupies 462 square kilometers of land.
